MobileXpression is a market research panel “designed to understand the trends and behaviors of people using the mobile internet.”  The way they attempt to understand these trends and behaviors is by asking people to download their mobile app and allowing it to monitor your mobile phone usage and reporting back to them.

They are a little different from other panel sites in that you probably won’t do many surveys with MobileXpression.  They really just want to get their app onto your phone to monitor your usage.

The MobileXpression Promise

MobileXpression makes several impressive claims:

Join our panel, and within one week you will begin winning prizes.  The chances of winning such prizes are:

Prize Chance of winning
Amazon.com $5.00 Gift Certificate 98.00%
Starbucks $10 Gift Certificate 1.00%
2-in-1 Sport Earhooks with Earbuds 0.45%
Arctic Portable Stereo Speakers 0.45%
GoPro Hero4 0.05%
Samsung 48-inch LCD HDTV 0.05%

They make the claim that “everyone wins!” To further entice you to keep the app on your mobile device, they state that by keeping the app on your smartphone, you will be eligible for entries into their “Weekly Winners Sweepstakes” with prizes awarded each week.  They state that these prizes include the chance to win cash prizes from $100 up to $100,000.

They also claim to offer occasional surveys to their panel via email.  From what I can tell, this is actually true but these surveys are few and far between.

But wait, there’s more!  MobileXpression claims that after using their mobile app on your device for 90 days, they will donate a tree to be planted by an organization called Trees for Knowledge.  They will continue donating one tree for every additional month that you keep your membership.  Not only might you make a little cash, but you will also be helping the environment by planting trees.

Does Anyone Really Win?

Almost everyone seems to get the initial Amazon $5 gift certificate.  The 98% chance of winning seems to actually be true.  So you will likely make $5 just for signing up and installing their app on your phone and leaving it on your phone for a week.  At this point, you have done very little and made $5, not bad!

Beyond the $5 gift certificate at the beginning, it seems very few people win any other prizes.  I can not find evidence of one single person having ever won one of the stated prizes.  This could just be because these people are not on forums or online talking about survey sites, or it could very well be that MobileXpression never awards anyone with these prizes and nobody would really know the difference.

Who Can Sign Up for MobileXpression?

Only certain mobile devices are eligible for their program, but the list does appear to be pretty extensive.  They are compatible with many types of Apple and Android devices on many different carriers.  I am sure there will be some people out there whose phones will not be compatible but it seems most popular models are included.

Beyond the requirement to have certain makes and models of mobile device, it does not seem there are any other necessary requirements to be eligible to join.

Is It Safe to Use Their Mobile App?

It probably will not do you or your phone any harm, so yes it is likely safe.  However, when you install it you are giving MobileXpression full access to your mobile device.  They claim to only be monitoring your internet usage and anonymizing it, but you never really know for sure if that is true. While it is likely safe, that does not mean you are not giving away a lot of information about yourself.

If you don’t mind someone watching everything that you do, then this may not bother you much.  Some people have no concern about allowing someone to watch the way they use their devices, while others do.

How Will It Affect My Device

Users report that it does slow down your device a bit and drain the battery faster, but not in a significant way.  It seems that the way the app functions is that it routes all web traffic through mobileXpression’s VPN for monitoring.  The last thing to note here is that the app can be difficult to remove if you decide to but they do provide uninstall instructions to you.

Is This Site a Scam?

ScamAdviser.com gives this site a 30% score, with a rating of “Suspcious” or “Might be Unsafe.”

Many reviewers that have tested this app and program out have had no problems at all with installing the app and getting paid the $5 amazon gift certificate in the beginning.

Many other reviewers report that upon winning the $5 gift certificate their account will get locked for “breach of terms” and they will not actually be able to receive the payout.  This seems to be a common complaint around the web.  Again to be fair, this could be due to the fact that people are genuinely breaching the contract in some way, because some people have no problem getting the payouts at all while others do.

I don’t believe this site is a scam, but it does not seem like you will get much for your valuable time with them.  If it were truly as simple as installing the app, letting it run inconspicuously in the background, and earning money for continuing to use the internet the same way you always have then I would say it seems like a great panel.  However, it does not seem quite so simple.  It seems that many people have trouble claiming their payouts, many people get shut down conveniently right around the time of “winning” a prize and to top it all off you would have to take the risks of these things happening while allowing this company full access to your mobile device.

You have to decide for yourself if the risks are worth the rewards.  If for no other reason, you may be able to make a quick $5 and potentially more but you have to be comfortable allowing someone to watch everything that you are doing over your shoulder.  If you are comfortable with this, give it a shot!  What is the worst that can happen?
